Nara Smith and why we're so oblivious about where our food comes from

I’ve seen a lot of backlash regarding Nara Smith lately. If you are new to TikTok, then let me enlighten you, Nara Smith is a mom, wife and model who has amassed quite the following in recent years here on TikTok. She is most famous for preparing meals from scratch for her family while wearing these fabulous outfits and couture dresses.

What’s the issue you may ask, well for some reason people are all up in arms about her preparing meals for her husband and kids. She’s been called anti-feminist and a trad-wife. I’m sorry what?!

First of all, preparing food from scratch is not a new concept. This uproar only shows how disconnected most of us are from our food. When I want to eat pasta and pesto, I make my own pesto from scratch and if I have the time I make my own pasta too. My mom has been baking her own bread and making her own yoghurt for as long as I remember. My grandmother used to make her own sausages, preserves and cheeses.

Women in Guatemala grind corn for tortillas every day. What’s the big deal?

Just because some of you don’t know where your food actually comes from (and I don’t mean the supermarket) doesn’t make what Nara is doing odd or weird. It just shines a light on how disconnected most people are from their food.

Why hate on someone who shows us an alternative lifestyle? Someone who chooses wholesome over convenient?

Take a leaf off Nara's (recipe) book and cook yourself a lovely meal from scratch. Who knows, you might actually enjoy it.
